A lone pink flower spends springtime alone, with no flowery friend to share the wonders of the natural world. Will it be the same next spring?
Spring is in the air and the desire to pick the flowers is irresistible! We wanted to encourage children to be more mindful when picking flowers and introduce them to the life cycle of plants.
This story starts with the poem “The Little Plant” by Kate Brown.
“In the heart of a seed buried deep so deep
A dear little plant lay fast asleep
Wake! said the sun and reach for the light
Wake! said the voice of the rain drops bright
So the dear little plant awoke to see
What the wonderful outside world might be”*
Up went her stem towards the sky
Out stretched her leaves proud and high
And on the tip of her top, between petals so pink
she opened her eye and started to blink
Look at those clouds! How fluffy and white
Look at the trees oh so full of might
There goes a lizard fast over the hill
And a grasshopper hiding on the bark so still
Listen! To The faraway birds so free
And the near buzz buzzing of the busiest bee
Oh what joy it is to see
just how wonderful the outside world can be
But she looked all around and found not one sight
of a flowery friend with whom to share her delight.
Alone she spent spring so gloomy and sad
Will summer, and fall/autumn be just as bad?
Then a butterfly came to visit on a day so clear
You look sad, said the butterfly, what is it dear?
Well it’s a wonderful world but I see no sight
of a flowery friend with whom to share this delight.
Ah, You are in luck said the butterfly wiggling the tip of her top
I’ve brought you some pollen from the hill top
Where there are flowers just like you
And with this pollen you can make seeds anew
Then you will wilt and fall though it doesn’t seem right
The sun will come and the rain drops bright
Your seeds with new roots will reach for the light
So Spring arrived with blooming buds by her side
And she rose again with a new found pride
She looked all around to a beautiful sight
Pink, red and blue flowers with whom to share her delight
